How Dog Years Are Calculated
The old rule that one dog year equals seven human years is a myth — dogs mature much faster than that in their first two years, then age at a rate that depends heavily on size. This dog age calculator uses the guideline widely cited by veterinary organisations and breed clubs:
- First year of a dog's life ≈ 15 human years
- Second year adds ≈ 9 human years (a 2-year-old dog ≈ 24)
- Each year after that adds ≈ 4 (small), 5 (medium), 6 (large) or 7 (giant) human years
Counter-intuitively, big dogs mature more slowly as puppies but age faster as adults — a 7-year-old Great Dane is a senior, while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is comfortably middle-aged.
