About the Age Difference Calculator

The age difference calculator measures the exact time between two people's dates of birth. Enter both birthdays and the tool shows the gap in years, months and days, each person's current age, and the total difference in days.

People often check age gaps between partners, siblings, friends, parents and children, or public figures. Age differences also matter in some legal and administrative contexts, such as school year placement and pension eligibility for couples.

How the Age Gap Is Measured

The calculator subtracts the earlier date of birth from the later one using real calendar dates, so leap years and varying month lengths are handled automatically. The result is the same regardless of which person you enter first — the tool identifies who is older for you.

Example: Person 1 born 10 May 1990, Person 2 born 20 August 1995:

From 10 May 1990 to 10 May 1995 is 5 years; to 10 August is 3 more months; to 20 August is 10 more days. Age gap: 5 years, 3 months, 10 days (1,928 days).

What Counts as a Typical Age Gap?

Some context for the numbers you calculate: demographic studies in Western countries put the average age gap between spouses at roughly 2 to 3 years, with the husband older in most — but far from all — couples. Gaps between siblings most commonly fall between 2 and 4 years, a spacing many parents choose deliberately. Between a parent and child, the gap simply equals the parent's age at the birth, which averages around 28–31 years in most developed countries today.

Age gaps also matter administratively: school systems group children born within a 12-month window, so two classmates can be almost exactly a year apart in age; and some pension schemes take a couple's age difference into account for survivor benefits.

The "Half Your Age Plus Seven" Rule

You may have heard the informal social rule that the youngest acceptable partner age is "half your age plus seven." For a 30-year-old that suggests 22; for a 50-year-old, 32. It has no legal or scientific basis — it's simply a folk guideline that appears in etiquette books as far back as the early 1900s — but it's a fun benchmark to check against the exact gap this calculator gives you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the order of the two dates matter?
No. The calculator automatically detects which person is older and reports the gap accordingly.
Can I compare more than two people?
Run the tool once per pair. For example, to compare three siblings, check sibling 1 vs 2, then 2 vs 3.
